First predator didn't even have square pants

The creature, Otavia antiqua, was found in 760-million-year-old rock in Namibia and was as tiny as it may be important. "The fossils are small, about the size of a grain of sand, and we have found many hundreds of them," said study leader Anthony Prave, a geologist at the University of St. Andrews in the U.K. "In fact, when we look at thin sections of the rocks, certain samples would likely yield thousands of specimens. Thus, it is possible that the organisms were very abundant."
From these tiny "sponges" sprang very big things, the authors suggest. As possibly the first muticellular animals, Otavia could well be the forerunner of dinosaurs, humans-basically everything we think of as "animal."

The little critter persevered almost unchanged through those times, resisting along with algae and bacteria for roughly 200 million years, just before the Cambrian explosion, when Earth started to fill up with many different animals.

200 Million years without changing?! That is pretty incredible especially because if you saw a picture of me last year you'd wonder who the hell that was*.

First human-made painting... ever (discovered)

According to new dating tests, these are the first paintings ever made by humans. They are seals painted more than 42,000 years ago, located in the Cave of Nerja, in Málaga, Spain. And they may change our ideas about humanity's evolution. Until now, archeologists thought that the oldest art was created during the Aurignacian period, by modern humans. But these are way older, way more primitive than the ones in Chauvet-Pont-d'Arc Cave, the 32,000-year-old paintings featured in Herzog's Cave of Forgotten Dreams.
According to the latest dating of the charcoal found next to the paintings—used either to make the paintings or illuminate them—these seals may have been made more than 42,300 years ago. In fact, they may be as old as 43,500 years.

That's pretty cool, but is it just me or is this actually also a biology discovery? That looks shockingly like a DNA Strand.

The Russian scientists drilling into ancient buried Antarctic Lake Vostok have reached their destination, the Russian news agency Ria Novosti reported today. The team is apparently alive and well despite a week of suspicious radio silence, but more details are to come about what they’ve found buried under two miles of ice.

“Yesterday, our scientists stopped drilling at the depth of 3,768 meters and reached the surface of the sub-glacial lake,” the source reportedly said in a story posted Monday, Feb. 6.

Tom Terrific broke the law

If the gov't is going to go after the "commoner" for downloading things that AREN'T AVAILABLE OTHERWISE, then this yahoo should be fined too. What really pisses me off about this isn't as much the fact that he didn't realize he shouldn't say things like this at news conferences, but a great deal of illegal downloading of media occurs because its distributor releases it on archaic schedules, in archaic formats with archaic restrictions. Many people would HAPPILY PAY for what they end up torrenting, if they could otherwise find it.
